SAI Sanctuary: India's First Private Wildlife Sanctuary
Hey guys. Hope you guys had a splendid Diwali celebration. I'm done with about one fourth of the translation of the third satsangam. Adding on to your crackers and sweets, I've found an article that'll not only bring the awareness of different species, but will also bring awareness about how we use our planet wisely. I hope this raises your attention and promotes welfare throughout the world. With that said, I'll be happy to introduce the article, "SAI Sanctuary: India's First Private Wildlife Sanctuary."
As we grow up in Earth, each person is shaped according to where they live. The different places they visit will forever live in their memories and throughout their lives. As the Earth impacts us on how we live, we also need to have an impact on the Earth in return. We need to make the Earth a beautiful and secure place to live for others. As nature germinates into its beauty that it is today, it is up to us to trim the little bits and pieces of ugliness out. That is exactly what motivated this gifted couple to start this sanctuary for preserving nature's beauty.
Anil K Malhotra and Pamela decided to go to Hawaii for their honeymoon. One thing that was common among them, besides their love for each other, was their love for the nature since childhood. Their excursion to Hawaii seriously made a dent on their life, because it was then that the couple realized the value of forests and no efforts were being made to save the forests for the future despite threats of global warming. In 1986, they came back to India(haridhwar) for the funeral of Anil's father. They could explicitly see the difference between Hawaii and India. While Hawaii was rich with flora and fauna, Haridwar's atmosphere was blinded by its pollution. This is what sparked the couple's decision to do something to reclaim the forests in India.
They have transformed 300 acres of farmland in Karnataka into a private wildlife sanctuary known as the 'Save Animals Initiative or SAI Sanctuary,' It is said to be the first private sanctuary in India. Anil and Pamela spent the last 25 years buying denude agricultural land in Karnataka's Kodagu district and reforesting it. Then, they finally transformed it into a biodiverse rainforest home to more than 300 kinds of birds as well as many rare and endangered animal species. When Anil first came here to buy this land, they stated that it was a wasteland of 55 acres. The owner had the intention to sell it because it couldn't be used to grow coffee or anything else here. But, Anil looked at this wasteland as if it was a heap of diamonds lying in a ditch.
They sold the property they owned in Hawaii and bought the initial land of 55 acres at the foothills of the Brahmagiri range and began afforestation work. But later, they realized that there was no use of growing a forest on one side of the stream as the landholders on the other side were using pesticides for cultivation. Anil stated that he was anxious of buying the land across the stream whenever they cam up for sale. Many of the landholders evaluate their land as a wasteland as nothing of their desire ever grew in that area. Once they bought the land, they allowed the forest to regenerate and let nature be itself. Today, SAI Sanctuary covers approximately 300 acres, and attracts naturalists and scientists from all over the globe for research on the different animal species like the Bengal Tiger, Sambhar, and Asian Elephants as well as hundreds of indigenous trees and plants, which have medicinal value.
This couple transformed a once called wasteland by landowners into a 300 acre nature-filled sanctuary. This was not an easy task as it took nearly 25 years for the sanctuary to come to its state. They had to find the ideal location, they had to have the motive, the surrounding land shouldn't be contaminated with pesticides, etc. What I'm trying to tell you guys is that they have to go through so much to create the perfect sanctuary. We should all have a mindset of conserving our planet and not have a mindset of destroying it by causing ecological harm. In our Hindu religion, we consider Bhoomi Devi (Earth) as a God and Prakruthi (nature) as one of the five elements of the world. So, safeguarding the nature is one of our vital duties. Also, we should treat animals as if they are one of us. We shouldn't cause inhumane and violent activities that promote the killing of these type of animals. In our Hindu religion, the cow is a symbol of god. According to Hindu texts, we should treat cows like a God. But, it's kind of shocking to see that India, predominantly filled with Hindus, is one of the top five beef exporters in the world. We should promote innovation that supports the life of these type of precious animals instead of destroying it. I hope this article changes your vision towards the world.
